Winters in Central New York are no joke. With the cold temperatures and heavy snowfalls that often last into March, it can feel like the season will never end. Winter is especially difficult for seniors as it’s easy to feel shut in and isolated during these cold months. Filling this time with senior friendly outings is a great way to help your elderly loved one get out of the house and feel less isolated. Luckily, Central New York is filled with senior friendly activities that both you and your loved one can enjoy. Below, we’ve listed a few ideas to add to your agenda when your loved one starts feeling restless.

Take a trip to Destiny USA

If you’re looking for a venue that has multiple options, Destiny USA is the place to go! Whether you’re looking for shopping, dining, or entertainment, it can all be found here. Destiny is also ADA accessible, with handicapped parking, wheelchair rentals, and automatic doors throughout so you and your loved one will be able to navigate through the entire mall with ease.

Go see a movie

If you’re looking for the ultimate movie going experience, the Movie Tavern in Camillus is a great option, offering meals and snacks to go along with your movie, as well as comfortable seating. Going to the movies will get you and your loved one out of the house for a couple of hours, and an entertaining movie is a great way to get your loved one’s mind off the cold and snow outside. The Movie Tavern isn’t the only place to go for a movie either—Regal Cinemas located in Destiny USA is another local option.

Enjoy a live show

The excitement of a live show is hard to beat—and Syracuse is home to some beautiful venues, including the historic Landmark Theatre and the Syracuse Stage. There are live shows and performances offered throughout the year. Syracuse Stage also offers wheelchair accessibility and handicapped parking.

Visit a museum

For a more interactive experience, consider visiting one of the many museums in Central New York. There’s something for everyone, including the Everson Museum of Art and the Museum of Science & Technology (MOST). For a look into the past, history lovers will appreciate the Salt Museum in Liverpool and the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse.

Cheer on the Syracuse Orange

If your loved one is a Syracuse Orange Basketball fan, give them the ultimate experience of going to a live game at the Carrier Dome! Handicapped parking is available, and the dome is also wheelchair accessible. There are also designated seating areas that accommodate wheelchairs and mobility limited seating, so you won’t have to worry about your loved one having to climb stairs or walk long distances if they are unable to.
