Susan Powers

Helping a long-time area couple stick together

One has physical limitations. The other, dementia. But both found a warm home here.

Susan Powers, of Skaneateles, N.Y., helped both her parents settle into long term care at The Commons on St. Anthony in September. Her father, Gilbert Porter, had dementia, and her mother, Grace Porter, could no longer take care of him—or herself.

“My parents went to The Commons a day apart,” Susan says. “My mom went in first. After a hospital stay, transferring her to a facility that offered 24-hour care became medically necessary. She wasn’t able to go home because she was unable to walk. If you can’t walk, you can’t take care of yourself, much less take care of someone else.”

Grace had been her husband’s primary caregiver. Together, they were quite a team.

With her mother admitted for long term care, the time quickly came for Susan to make a decision about her father. The Commons was on their list, but Susan and her sister looked at other facilities in the Auburn area, too.

“We chose The Commons on St. Anthony because we could keep my mom and dad together under one roof,” Susan says.

Initially, there was some uncertainty about The Commons’ dementia care, as the sisters had never seen the facility, but all concerns were quickly dispelled thanks to the “wonderful renovations.” Susan’s parents were able to get the unique support each one needs.

“The staff gives excellent care and they’re great with us. They keep us very informed,” Susan says.

This care included providing a space for the family to celebrate a special occasion:

“For my parents’ 68th anniversary, we had a place for the whole family to get together—on the exact day and exact time that they got married,” Susan says. “We ate pie and had a singalong and everyone enjoyed it.”

Susan encourages anyone who lives in the Auburn area to consider The Commons on St. Anthony.

“Look in your own backyard first,” she says. “If you want to visit your loved ones on a regular basis, you really want them to be close.”
